'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' hits the charts with record business at its opening first week.
year has passed since the climactic events of 2007's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which culminated in the reemergence of the sinister Lord Voldemort. Darkness is spreading across the muggle and wizard worlds alike as the orthodontically-challenged Bellatrix Lestrange and the rest of her Death Eater crew roam freely between both realms, leaving devastation and chaos in their wake.
Newly famous thanks to his heroic exploits, Harry Potter has barely a chance to cash in on his celebrity before his old pal Dumbledore arrives to whisk him away on an urgent wizarding matter to the town of Budleigh Babberton. It’s there the two encounter the eccentric Horace Slughorn, a former professor of potions at Hogwarts who now hides out in the homes of vacationing muggles. Convinced that Slughorn is withholding knowledge crucial to the defeat of Voldemort, Dumbledore enlists his most famous student to help convince the starstruck professor to return to his old position at Hogwarts. He then tasks Harry with finding out what Slughorn is hiding.
As danger mounts outside the school, romance blossoms within it. Oblivious to the affections of Hermione, Ron Weasley has begun dating the cloying busybody Lavender Brown, while Harry has developed a crush of his own on Ron’s sister Ginny, who’s currently attached to Dean Thomas. It's quite the tangled teenage web; the element of magic, with its love potions and other mind-altering concoctions, only further complicates matters.
Unamused by the romantic proceedings is Draco Malfoy, now clad entirely in black and simmering with hatred and envy for his rival Harry. Draco’s rage and resentment make him a perfect pawn for Voldemort, who recruits the angry young lad to aid in the Death Eaters’ attempts to infiltrate Hogwarts and exact revenge upon Dumbledore.
Draco’s suspicious behavior doesn’t go unnoticed by Harry, who becomes convinced that his long-time nemesis is surreptitiously working in league with the Dark Lord. But when his concerns are dismissed by the Hogwarts hierarchy, Harry mounts his own investigation and makes a disturbing discovery: Draco has been receiving help from someone on the inside, a traitor whose efforts could pave the way for Voldemort’s ultimate triumph.

His music will be remembered forever."Few details were known about the circumstances surrounding Jackson's death, but the entertainer was reportedly unconscious and not breathing by the time he arrived at UCLA Medical Center, and doctors were unable to revive him.His body was flown by helicopter from the hospital to the coroner's office late on Thursday.Brian Oxman, a spokesman for the Jackson family, told CNN on Thursday the family had been concerned about his health and had tried in vain to take care of him for months."Michael appeared at rehearsals a couple of times, he was very seriously trying to be able to do those rehearsals," Oxman said of Jackson's preparations for a series of 50 concerts that were scheduled to begin in London in July."His use of medications had gotten in the way, his injuries which he had sustained performing, where he had broken a vertebrae and he had broken his leg from a fall on the stage, were getting in the way," Oxman told CNN.Authorities have scheduled an autopsy for Friday. But they cautioned it could take weeks to determine a cause of death, which will likely have to wait for the return of toxicology tests. Those tests will determine if Jackson had any drugs, alcohol or prescription medications in his system.Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery Homicide division searched Jackson's home in the upscale Holmby Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles at the behest of Chief William Bratton. But they called the investigation an "every day" event.

Little do they know, however, that back on Cybertron a Decepticon elder known as “The Fallen” is hatching a scheme to invade Earth, where hidden somewhere on the planet is the last known source of energon, the life-blood of all Transformers. If he succeeds, the devastation left in his wake will no doubt spell the end of the human race. With the fate of Earth hanging in the balance, Sam and Mikaela must once again have to team up with Optimus and the Autobots to defeat this powerful new foe.

All the major human players from the first Transformers film are back for the sequel, including Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Tyrese Gibson and John Turturro Newcomers include Ramon Rodriguez, who plays Sam’s conspiracy-obsessed college roommate Leo, and The Office’s Rainn Wilson, who enjoys a notable cameo as a pompous physics professor. Of course, the actors merely serve as background filler for the real stars of the show: those titular talking-alien robots. And director Micheal Bay fills up the screen with enough mechanical eye candy to dazzle even the most skeptical gearhead. Returning characters include Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ratchet, Ironhide, Barricade, Jazz (don’t act surprised), Starscream, Frenzy and Megatron (again, don’t act surprised). Several new Autobots are introduced to the mix: Mudflap and Skids, a pair of jive-talking, ceaselessly annoying hatchbacks; Jolt, a Chevy Volt; Sideswipe, a silver Corvette; and Jetfire, an elderly Decepticon turncoat who walks with a cane, speaks with an English accent and transforms into an SR-71 Blackbird. Additions to Decepticon side include: The Fallen, who we learn is the Decepticons’ real head honcho (consider him the Emperor Palpatine to Megatron’s Darth Vader); Soundwave, a communications specialist who sinks his tentacles into a satellite and spies on us from above; Ravage, a panther-like creature; Wheelie, a radio-controlled truck who talks like Joe Pesci; “the Doctor,” a sort of mad scientist who speaks with a German accent (naturally); and the Constructicons, a group of construction vehicles that fuse together to form a massive, four-legged beast.
No director does over-the-top, explosion-laded action better than Michael Bay, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen features several staggering set pieces. The CGI work on this film makes the last one look like it was designed on a Commodore 64.
Any scene in which people talk — and several of the ones in which robots talk, too. Just as the action and visual effects are beefed up for the sequel, the bad jokes and cringe-worthy dialogue are as well. Highlights include two dogs humping, John Turturro in a thong, a robot humping Megan Fox’s leg, a sequence involving Sam’s stoned mom, and a glimpse of a very large pair of testicles on one very large Decepticon. The latter will likely go down as the “nipples-on-the-Batsuit” moment for the Transformers franchise.

Pixar makes it ten gems in a row with this enchanting animated story of 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen, a recent widower who decides to fulfill his (plus his late wife’s) lifelong dream of tying thousands of balloons to their house and floating off to a mountaintop in South America. But he soon discovers a stowaway in the form of Russell, a precocious eight-year-old “Wilderness Explorer” who he reluctantly allows to accompany him on his journey. Together the unlikely pair embark on the adventure of a lifetime, encountering Kevin, a rare, 13-foot tall-flightless bird; Dug, an overly-friendly talking pooch; and Charles Muntz, a once-famous adventurer who now lives alone in a massive airship, surrounded by a pack of attack dogs.
Could Up, which just became the first animated film to open the Cannes Film Festival, also become the first to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar since Beauty and the Beast in 1991 (before the Animation category was even established)? At this point in the year, it’s actually a good bet. Whatever the case, expect Up to earn several nominations come Oscar time.
